LEDs use dramatically less electricity, last dramatically longer, and contain no mercury or hazardous materials. Fewer bulbs manufactured, fewer replaced, lower ongoing energy use. The environmental advantage of LED over the full lifecycle is clear.

Many countries and regions have now phased out or are in the process of phasing out the sale of incandescent bulbs entirely, recognising that the energy efficiency gap is simply too significant to justify continued production.

When Incandescent Still Makes Sense

Almost never in 2026. But there are a few edge cases worth noting:

Some very specific photographic or studio applications require the exact spectral characteristics of incandescent light and have not yet found a suitable LED equivalent. This is a specialist case that applies to almost no residential lighting decision.

Some people still prefer the aesthetic of exposed filament incandescent bulbs for a specific vintage look. LED filament bulbs — which replicate the appearance of incandescent filaments while using LED technology — have resolved even this objection for most applications.

Incandescent bulbs work with any standard dimmer switch without compatibility issues, while LED requires a dimmable-rated bulb and compatible LED dimmer. If you have an older dimmer installed and are unwilling to replace it, an incandescent bulb avoids potential flickering. The correct solution, however, is to replace the dimmer — modern LED dimmers are inexpensive and straightforward to install.
